House – indeterminate date, Ballymahony, Co. Clare

At the eastern base of Binroe Castle in Ballymahony, County Clare, a set of house foundations sits so quietly that it is easy to mistake them for a natural rise in the ground.

Grass has colonised the collapsed walls until they read as gentle ridges rather than structure, yet measured out they describe a room roughly 6.5 metres east to west and 7.4 metres north to south, with walls that were once somewhere between one and a half and two and a half metres thick. No doorway survives, no window opening, no threshold stone; whatever ordered life once took place inside has left no legible trace beyond the outline itself.

The house is one of at least two such structures clustered around the castle mound. A second set of foundations of similarly indeterminate date lies immediately to the west of the mound, and from the north-west corner of this eastern house a further wall footing runs westward for about four metres before turning north and continuing for an estimated ten metres before fading altogether. Whether this represents a yard boundary, an enclosure, or the remnant of a further building is unclear. What the arrangement suggests, cautiously, is a small domestic grouping that used the shelter or the authority of Binroe Castle as an organising point, though whether that relationship was contemporary with the castle's occupation or long subsequent to it cannot be said from what survives above ground. Castles in Clare were built across a wide span of centuries, and the people who later farmed or sheltered in their shadows rarely left records that matched the archaeology they left behind.
