Quarry, Outeragh, Co. Tipperary

There is a field in Outeragh, County Tipperary, where the ground dips into a shallow hollow on a west-facing slope, and almost nothing announces that anything of note ever happened there.

No masonry breaks the surface, no signage marks the spot. The pasture rolls on as it does in any direction. And yet the hollow itself, and what lies beneath it, carries a quiet record of change across more than a century and a half of map-making and aerial survey.

The site appears on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, surveyed around 1840, as an irregular enclosure with trees inside it. By the time the second edition was produced, between 1901 and 1905, that same area had been recorded simply as a quarry. What had been noted as a possible enclosure, perhaps of some older origin, had become by the turn of the twentieth century a working extraction site, or at least was understood as one. An aerial photograph taken in July 1989 (reference GB89.AA.27) shows a cropmark at the location, the kind of subtle tonal variation in growing vegetation that reveals buried or filled ground below. Cropmarks form when soil disturbance affects how plants draw moisture and nutrients, causing differences in colour or growth rate that are invisible at ground level but legible from the air. In this case, the cropmark is consistent with a quarry that has since been filled in. A shelter belt of trees now runs roughly north to south up to what would have been the eastern edge of the earlier enclosure, and a field boundary to the north runs in a northwest to southeast direction.

There is genuinely nothing to see here in any conventional sense, and that is part of what makes it worth knowing about. The landscape has closed over the site completely, and only the sequence of maps and that single aerial photograph preserve any trace of what was there.
