Burial Grounds

Site of Grave Yard, Carrigeensharragh, Co. Tipperary

Between a former orchard and a river slope in County Tipperary, a low raised mound in a pasture field marks what was once a burial ground, though you might not immediately recognise it as such.

The ground here is disturbed in ways that go beyond the natural settling of old graves. At the southern end, a water pump was installed at some point, with a substantial gravel mound built up around it, and the earth to the east of the pump has been noticeably hollowed out, possibly from gravel extraction carried out at the same time. Whatever the original extent of the cemetery may have been, the physical record left behind is incomplete and uneven.

The site sits on level ground that drops sharply to the west, with the River Moyle running at the base of that slope, while the land rises more gently to the east. It lies immediately south of the former orchard of Annsfort House. Rock outcrop sits just beneath the grass across the area. The visible raised portion measures roughly 29.5 metres north to south and 20.2 metres east to west, but the older Ordnance Survey 25-inch map shows a considerably larger oval footprint, approximately 62 metres east to west and 38 metres north to south, tapering towards the east, suggesting the burial ground once covered significantly more ground than what reads as distinct today. Running north to south beside the site is what appears to be an old trackway, which continues south-east towards a nearby ringfort, hinting at a landscape that was organised and in use long before any of the more recent interventions left their mark.
