Today, a modern house occupies that exact footprint, and the earthwork itself is no longer visible at ground level. What the cartographers recorded is gone in any practical sense, absorbed into the domestic and the ordinary.

Circular enclosures of this kind are common enough across the Irish landscape to have their own shorthand: ringforts, or raths, were typically enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, their banks and ditches serving as boundaries and as modest protection for a household and its livestock. The Capparoe example sat on flat pasture in an upland setting, with a second earthwork site recorded a short distance to the west, suggesting this was once a small cluster of settlement activity rather than an isolated feature. The first-edition OS maps, produced from the 1830s onwards, captured it at a moment when the banks were presumably still legible in the field, even if they were already fading. At some point between that survey and the present, the ground was cleared and built upon.

There is something quietly telling about a site like this one. It does not survive as a monument or a managed heritage feature; it survives only as a mark on an old map and a record that something was once there. The upland pasture of Capparoe holds no outward sign of what the soil beneath may still contain, and the house that now stands on the site has no obligation to acknowledge what came before it.
