Earthwork, Liskeveen, Co. Tipperary

At Liskeveen in County Tipperary, something lies beneath a field that can only be seen from the air.

Aerial photographs taken in 1966 and 1969 reveal a circular enclosure and earthworks within it, yet nothing of either feature is visible on the ground today. The landscape has swallowed them entirely, leaving a site that is, in a precise and literal sense, invisible to anyone standing on it.

The spot sits on a slight rise of rock outcrop in gently rolling countryside, and it has a long, layered past. By the time of the Civil Survey of 1654 to 1656, the place was already in decay; the surveyors recorded "the stumpe of an old castle and the ruines of an old Mill all wast," with one Thomas Butler of Kilconell, described as an Irish Papist, listed as proprietor. That designation reflected the legal and religious categorisation used under Cromwellian land settlement, when Catholic ownership was subject to scrutiny and potential forfeiture. The castle in question survives in modified form: a tower house, the compact fortified residence typical of late medieval Ireland, still stands three storeys high, built from roughly coursed limestone rubble with punch-dressed quoins, the squared and dressed corner stones that gave such structures their structural integrity, and a slight base-batter, meaning the walls angle outward slightly at the base for added stability. It was substantially altered during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Separate from this tower house, and apparently unrelated to it, a circular ditch or drainage feature is detectable to the north, visible only through the shadow-and-crop-mark evidence that aerial photography can reveal across old ground. Within that enclosure, further earthworks show up on the same photographs, their purpose and date unknown.
