Hut site, Ballykisteen, Co. Tipperary

At Ballykisteen in County Tipperary, the most revealing version of a particular ancient structure exists not on the ground but on paper.

A small circular feature, roughly eight metres in diameter, sits at the centre of a ringfort and was carefully recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1843. That map shows it as a hachured circle, the cartographers' way of indicating a raised or hollow earthwork, positioned at the exact middle of the enclosure. Later editions of the same map show it only partially, a sign that it was already beginning to fade. Today, it has been levelled entirely and is no longer visible at ground level.

The feature was identified in Office of Public Works correspondence as a hut site, which is broadly what you might expect to find inside a ringfort. A ringfort, typically a circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, was the standard form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, and the dwelling of the household would commonly have stood near its centre. Here, the positioning fits that pattern precisely. The ringfort itself occupies a spot with good views in all directions, a quality that was almost certainly practical rather than incidental, allowing those within to monitor the surrounding landscape. The hut site's diameter of around eight metres would have been a reasonably substantial structure for the period, though nothing about its construction materials or the date of its occupation can now be recovered from what survives.
