It is compact, barely the size of a wardrobe: 1.7 metres long, 1.5 metres wide, and only 0.8 metres high, built against a slight but abrupt rise in the rocky ground and open to the north-east. A row of large stones is set transversely across the ground some three metres in front of the opening, as if marking a threshold. The roof is made from overlapping slabs laid flush with the top of the rise alongside. Taken together, these features gesture towards a megalithic tomb, the kind of prehistoric stone chamber found throughout Ireland, but the structure refuses to confirm that interpretation.

What complicates the reading is almost everything about its situation. The two stones forming the western side, the single long stone curving around to partially close the rear, and the drystone walling completing that closure are all consistent with ancient construction, but they could equally reflect later, more pragmatic hands. Writing in the early 1980s, researcher Manning noted that the awkward siting of the feature within what appears to be a post-medieval farmyard complex, combined with the absence of clear diagnostic characteristics, leaves both its nature and its antiquity genuinely uncertain. It may be a prehistoric burial chamber absorbed and altered by later agricultural use. It may be something else entirely, a field structure, a shelter, a folly of sorts, that borrowed the visual language of older stonework. That ambiguity has not been resolved since Manning first recorded it.
