Barrow (Ring Barrow), Moanmore, Co. Tipperary

A slight rise in a wet Tipperary pasture, easy to walk past without a second thought, turns out to contain the faint but legible remains of a ring barrow, a type of prehistoric funerary monument in which a low central mound is enclosed by a circular ditch and an outer earthen bank.

This one at Moanmore sits on a natural curvilinear ridge overlooking what may once have been a flood plain to the north, a position that would have given it a quiet visual dominance over the surrounding low ground. It was not found by fieldwork but picked out on an aerial photograph, the Ordnance Survey frame catalogued as 2434/5, which is often how these understated features come to light at all.

The monument is modest in scale, roughly six metres north to south and five metres east to west, with a fosse, meaning a surrounding ditch, about two metres wide and a low outer bank that survives best along its north-north-east to east-north-east arc. The measurements are slight: the bank rises only a few centimetres above the interior on one side and marginally more on the exterior, which gives some sense of how thoroughly time and agricultural improvement have flattened what was once a more pronounced earthwork. A land drain running north-east to south-west has cut across the outer edge of the ditch on its southern side, adding a more recent layer of alteration to whatever earlier disturbance farming brought. The interior itself is not entirely level; its northern half slopes gently downward, while the southern half sits flat, a detail that may reflect the underlying natural ridge rather than any deliberate construction. A second ring barrow lies approximately fifty-five metres to the west-south-west, suggesting this was not an isolated burial marker but part of a small funerary landscape whose full extent remains unclear.
