Holy well, Lodge, Co. Tipperary

A holy well that leaves no trace above ground occupies a particular category of Irish sacred site: known, recorded, and yet essentially invisible.

Near Lodge in County Tipperary, a spring feeds a small stream that runs eastward to join the River Tar, and somewhere in the low-lying pasture at the base of a ridge, roughly seventy metres north of that river, this well exists without any surface remains to mark it out from the surrounding grass.

The site's status as a holy well rests on a single early twentieth-century source. Patrick Power, writing in 1908, identified it as both a holy well and the location of an associated church, a pairing that appears across Ireland wherever early Christian communities gathered around a reliable water source, the well often predating or outlasting the church itself. What makes this particular case quietly puzzling is the cartographic silence surrounding it. Neither the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1840 nor the revised edition of 1907 marks it as a holy well, which suggests that by the time systematic surveying was underway, whatever local devotional life had once centred on the spring had either faded or gone unrecorded by those doing the fieldwork. The ridge that rises to the northeast and the stream running roughly southeast to northwest are the only landmarks that frame it now.
