Field system, Middlequarter, Co. Tipperary

High on the slopes of the Knockmealdown mountains in County Tipperary, a network of old stone walls threads across the hillside at Middlequarter in a pattern that speaks to a vanished way of working the land.

What makes this place quietly arresting is the scale and variety of what survives: not a single wall or a solitary ruin, but an interlocking system of enclosures, hut sites, clearance cairns, and field boundaries spread across two adjoining hills, Barranacullia and Knocknagearagh. Clearance cairns, for context, are the piled mounds of stone that result from laboriously clearing a field for cultivation or grazing, and their presence here alongside hut sites and enclosures suggests a community that was not merely passing through but actively shaping this upland landscape.

The full extent of the complex was identified by Diarmuid O'Keeffe in 1996. On the south-western slopes of Barranacullia, one wall runs for approximately 200 metres on a rough north-south line, beginning around 40 metres east of a hut site, with a further length branching off some 50 metres westward and downslope. On Knocknagearagh's gentle east-facing slope, about 70 metres south-south-east of a rectangular enclosure, a single wall section forms a broad curving arc nearly 38 metres long, 2.3 metres wide and standing between 0.38 and 0.48 metres high. O'Keeffe recorded another arcing wall roughly 220 metres south-south-east of a separate hut site. Perhaps the most complex piece of walling is associated with a circular enclosure: beginning about 20 metres north-west of that enclosure, it runs westward for around 50 metres, then turns south-westward for 130 metres, then curves eastward and north-eastward for a further 80 metres before fading out entirely. A possible ring-cairn, a roughly circular monument typically formed from a bank or ring of stones, adds another layer of potential significance to the site.
