Barrow (Ditch barrow), Ballyholahan, Co. Tipperary

In a wet, low-lying pasture in County Tipperary, a small circular earthwork sits almost invisibly in the landscape, its presence confirmed not by any obvious mound but by a slight scarped edge and a shallow surrounding ditch.

This is a ditch barrow, a funerary monument type in which a circular area is defined by a cut fosse rather than a raised bank, and the whole thing here measures just four metres across. It is modest enough to be overlooked entirely on foot, which is perhaps why it was only formally identified through an aerial photograph.

The structure is precisely that, a circular area enclosed by a scarped edge roughly 0.8 metres wide and just 0.1 metres high, with a shallow external fosse of similar modest dimensions. These are not dramatic earthworks; they are the kind of thing that rewards close attention rather than distance. What makes the site more interesting is its context. A ring-barrow, a related but distinct type of burial monument typically defined by a bank and internal ditch, lies only eighteen metres to the south, and further examples are recorded nearby. Together they suggest this corner of Ballyholahan was once a purposeful burial landscape, its individual components now scattered quietly across farmland. Along the north-western to north-north-eastern arc, the scarped edge and fosse have been worn away by livestock, a slow form of erasure that has been ongoing long enough to leave the barrow visibly incomplete on that side. The interior, by contrast, remains level and clear of overgrowth.
