Burial Grounds
A graveyard on a west-facing slope above the River Suir, with a ruined church tucked into its north-western corner, has a quiet logic to its layout that repays a closer look.
The roughly rectangular enclosure, measuring some 53 metres on its longer axis and 35 metres across, sits in rolling pasture with the river running around 200 metres to the west. That proximity to the Suir is not incidental. Early ecclesiastical sites in Ireland were frequently established near water, both for practical reasons and, in many cases, as part of a longer tradition of settling at liminal places where land meets river.
