Burial Grounds

Grave Yard, Clashganny, Co. Tipperary

In rough pastureland on a north-east-facing slope in County Tipperary, a triangular patch of ground holds what survives of a graveyard associated with an early church site.

What catches the attention first is the shape of the enclosure itself, roughly 33.5 metres across on its longer axis and tapering towards the south-east, defined partly by a low earthen bank and partly by a natural scarp. The bank, stone-faced on its eastern side, is modest in scale but deliberate in construction, and the ground within is markedly hummocky, the kind of uneven surface that tends to accumulate where generations of burial have disturbed and resettled the earth over many centuries.

The site has a layered strangeness to it. By the time the Ordnance Survey mapped the area in 1840, the graveyard was marked only with a dashed outline, a convention that suggests the boundary was not formally enclosed at that point. By the 1907 edition of the same map series, the site had disappeared from the record entirely. A standing stone sits in the south-east quadrant, adding another element that pulls the site further back in time than any graveyard wall might suggest. The presence of a standing stone within or immediately adjacent to an early ecclesiastical enclosure is not unusual in the Irish landscape, where prehistoric monuments were frequently absorbed into later sacred sites rather than cleared away. Writing in 1908, the scholar Power identified this as the location of an early church, a designation that situates it within the broad tradition of small, often pre-Norman foundations scattered across Tipperary and Munster more widely.
