Architectural fragment, Patrickswell, Co. Tipperary

At the base of the east gable inside the church at Patrickswell, County Tipperary, a collection of old stonework has been quietly set into the wall, fixed in place with concrete and easy to overlook entirely.

Among the pieces is what appears to be a roof apex coping stone, the type of dressed stone used to cap the ridge of a gable end, here surmounted by a square receptacle with a circular depression cut into its surface. The function of that hollow is not recorded, though such features in ecclesiastical contexts were sometimes used to collect water, hold votive offerings, or serve a liturgical purpose now long forgotten.

The fragments sit between the north wall of the church and the east window, immediately south of a related feature within the same building. The fact that they have been concreted into the gable base rather than displayed or catalogued in any formal way suggests they were gathered and secured at some point during later repairs or consolidation work, the kind of quiet salvage that happened in many Irish churches when older structural elements became loose or displaced. Exactly when or why the original stonework was removed from its first position is not known, but their current location means they survive, however awkwardly, within the fabric of the building rather than disappearing into rubble.
