Cross-slab, Ardane, Co. Tipperary

A small piece of reddish sandstone, barely the size of a large hardback book, sits on top of a wall in County Tipperary bearing the marks of two crosses, one carved on each face.

That it survives at all is remarkable enough; that it occupies a spot within one of the more unusual early Christian enclosures in Ireland makes it worth pausing over.

The slab belongs to St. Berrihert's Kyle, an ecclesiastical enclosure near Ardane that houses a collection of early medieval cross-slabs and carved stones. A cross-slab, in this context, is a flat stone bearing an incised or relief-carved cross, used in early Irish Christianity as a grave marker or devotional object, often predating the more elaborate high crosses. This particular example, catalogued as slab 7A/7B, is composed of reddish sandstone and measures roughly 33 centimetres by 23 centimetres, with a thickness of only 8 centimetres. On one face, a Latin cross is carved in low relief with squared hollows cut into the angles between the arms, and a ring attached to the top of the cross head, a feature that links it visually to the ringed or wheel-cross tradition so prevalent in early Irish stone carving. The reverse carries a second Latin cross in similarly low relief, around 7 millimetres proud of the surface, with irregular squared hollows in its angles. The differences between the two faces suggest the possibility of two carving episodes or at least two distinct hands at work on the same stone. The oval stone enclosure in which the collection now sits, stepped internally, was constructed by the Office of Public Works in 1946, giving the site a mid-twentieth-century frame around material that is likely well over a thousand years old.
