Cross-slab, Ardane, Co. Tipperary

Among the early medieval cross-slabs gathered within St. Berrihert's Kyle in County Tipperary, one small piece of red sandstone rewards close attention precisely because of its restraint.

Barely half a metre tall and less than twenty centimetres wide, it carries a Latin cross worked in relief so shallow, just three millimetres, that it reads almost as a whisper rather than a declaration. The face has been pocked smooth and the stone dressed to a careful, regular width, suggesting a hand that knew exactly what it was doing, even if the result is easily overlooked beside more elaborate neighbours.

The slab sits on an internal ledge in the northern sector of St. Berrihert's Kyle, an ecclesiastical enclosure associated with the obscure early Irish saint Berrihert. The site as a whole contains a remarkable concentration of cross-inscribed stones, and in 1946 the Office of Public Works constructed an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, to house and protect them. The slab in question, catalogued as slab 58 by the scholar Ó hÉailidhe writing in 1967, belongs to this protected collection. Because the stone is set against the ledge, its thickness and reverse face remain hidden from view, leaving only that quietly worked front surface visible, its cross caught in whatever light happens to fall across it.
