Cross-slab, Toureen, Co. Tipperary

In the low boundary wall of a small enclosure near Toureen Peacaun in County Tipperary, a fragment of early medieval stonework sits embedded at the top of the western side, almost as if it had simply been tidied away.

It is a partial cross-slab, meaning only a portion of its original form survives, and the stone has been set into the wall on its side rather than upright, which gives some sense of how it has been handled over the centuries. The visible face, measuring roughly 43 centimetres high and 24 centimetres wide, carries two distinct marks incised into the stone: an equal-armed cross, where all four arms are the same length, drawn in outline rather than relief, and above it a horizontal line of text whose language and meaning are not detailed in what survives about the stone.

The enclosure itself is known locally as the 'cell', a word that points toward early Christian monastic use, where a cell could refer to a small hermitage or ancillary religious space associated with a larger site. It lies about 100 metres south-east of Toureen Peacaun church, itself a site of considerable early medieval significance. By the early twentieth century, when FitzGerald recorded it in 1904, the slab was simply lying loose within the enclosure. At some point afterwards it was incorporated into the wall, which preserved it physically but removed it from whatever original context it once occupied. Scholars Okasha and Forsyth, writing in 2001, catalogued it as Toureen Peacaun 34, noting that the back of the stone is entirely plain, suggesting the decorated face was always the one intended to be seen.
