House – medieval, Ballyveelish, Co. Tipperary

A field in County Tipperary gave no indication, before the diggers arrived, that anything medieval lay beneath it.

No earthworks, no crop marks, no local memory of a structure. It took the construction of the Cork-Dublin gas pipeline in 1981 and 1982 to expose what turned out to be a moated site, the remains of a small rural settlement that had been entirely invisible above ground.

A moated site, in the Irish medieval context, refers to a farmstead or small manorial enclosure surrounded by a water-filled ditch, typically associated with Anglo-Norman settlement during the 13th and 14th centuries. The partial excavation at Ballyveelish identified four internal structures within the enclosure, three in the eastern section and a possible fourth to the west. One of these, designated Structure B, was defined by slot trenches on three sides, the kind of narrow foundation cuts left when timber uprights rot away over centuries. It contained three internal compartments of varying size, the largest measuring roughly 5.5 metres by 3.75 metres, suggesting a building that served more than one purpose, perhaps combining domestic and agricultural use under one roof or within one range. The finds recovered were consistent with a 13th or 14th century date, and their relatively small quantity, along with a modest assemblage of animal bones, led the excavator to suggest the site may have been occupied for only a brief period. A household that arrived, settled, and then disappeared from the record within a generation or two, leaving almost nothing but the ghost of its timber walls pressed into the subsoil.
