House – indeterminate date, Ballintogher, Co. Tipperary

On a rocky upland ridge in County Tipperary, what looks at first like a slight thickening of the grass turns out to be the ghost of a house.

The wall-footings at Ballintogher survive as low, grassed-over mounds, their stones long since robbed or simply sunk into the hillside, yet the outline of the building is still legible: a rectangular structure roughly twelve metres by six, with what appears to have been an entrance gap in the south-east wall and a smaller rectangular room or annexe projecting from the north-west side. That kind of internal subdivision, sometimes called a return, hints at a building of some domestic complexity, though whether it dates to the medieval period or somewhat later remains unresolved.

Aerial photographs taken in 1968 revealed a broader pattern of earthworks around a nearby church, suggesting that this was once a small settlement rather than a single isolated dwelling. At least two other possible house sites lie within a few dozen metres, one to the south-east and another closer to the church itself, along with a large enclosure to the north-east and a smaller one directly adjoining the churchyard. Taken together, the cluster points to a community that gathered around its place of worship on this exposed ridge, though the precise centuries it occupied remain uncertain. The site sits with panoramic views in all directions, which may explain both why people chose it and why so little survives above the surface.

The footings themselves are modest, the tallest external face rising only about a quarter of a metre. Visitors who know to look for the slight linear ridges in the turf, and who are already at the church, will find the main structure roughly forty-five metres to its north-west. The other remains are scattered nearby, and the whole site rewards a slow circuit on foot rather than a quick glance from the road.
