Barrow (Ring Barrow), Mooresfort, Co. Tipperary

A ring barrow is, in its simplest description, a burial monument enclosed by a circular or oval ditch, typically dating to the Bronze Age, and the one at Mooresfort in County Tipperary is the kind of site that rewards patient attention rather than a casual glance.

Sitting in open pasture on a gentle south-east-facing slope, this oval earthwork measures roughly 22 metres north-west to south-east and 18 metres in the opposite direction. It lies only about three metres south of a related ring barrow, meaning that two such monuments occupy the same gentle hillside, a proximity that suggests deliberate placement rather than coincidence.

The monument was identified during a field survey carried out by Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly on 25 November 2008. A fosse, the encircling ditch that defines the interior of such a monument, runs around the perimeter, though it is shallow and in places waterlogged, with a depth of around 0.1 metres and an overall width of just over five metres. An estate ditch and retaining wall, running north-west to south-east, bisects the oval off-centre toward the south-west, dividing the monument between two sides of a field boundary. Two mature trees now grow within the monument on the south-west side of that boundary. The portion of the site beyond the boundary has fared worse; a shallow drain cuts across it in the same general direction as the estate wall, and at ground level this section has effectively disappeared, the earthwork flattened to invisibility by agricultural and drainage activity over what were likely many generations.

What makes the site quietly telling is exactly this layering of erasure. An ancient enclosure that once marked a burial or ceremonial space has been progressively divided by estate infrastructure and agricultural drainage, to the point where half of it can only be measured rather than seen. The two trees rooted in the surviving portion add to the sense of accidental preservation, standing where a monument that predates them by several thousand years still just barely holds its shape in the ground.
