This is a ditch barrow, a type of prehistoric funerary monument defined not by a raised mound but by a surrounding fosse, a shallow ditched enclosure that marks off a circular interior from the land around it. The example at Shronell measures roughly 2.9 metres north to south and 2.75 metres east to west, with a fosse about 1.5 metres wide and only around 10 centimetres deep. The interior is grass-covered, giving no outward indication of what purpose it once served or what, if anything, lies beneath.

The site was identified during a field survey carried out by Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly on 2 February 2009, at which point the surrounding landscape had already been heavily modified by agricultural drainage. Water channels define the naturally elevated area on which the barrow stands, and an old farm trackway visible on the second edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1906 once ran roughly 13 metres to the east. What makes this spot particularly interesting is the density of related monuments in its immediate vicinity. Two further ditch barrows lie within a few metres, one approximately 4 metres to the west-southwest, another about 6 metres to the north-northwest. An enclosure of a different kind sits around 60 metres to the southwest. Together they suggest that this modest patch of Tipperary farmland was, at some point in prehistory, a place that people returned to repeatedly, layering the ground with monuments whose precise meanings are now lost.
