Barrow (Ditch barrow), Shronell, Co. Tipperary

In a field in County Tipperary, not far from where old water channels have left their traces in the soil, there sits a circular earthwork barely four metres across.

It is a ditch barrow, a form of prehistoric funerary monument defined not by a raised mound but by a surrounding fosse, which is simply a shallow dug ditch, enclosing a flat or slightly raised interior. This one is modest even by such standards: the fosse is only about thirteen centimetres deep and a metre and a half wide, and the enclosed circle measures roughly 3.9 metres north to south and 3.75 metres east to west. That it survives at all in improved, drained pastureland is quietly remarkable.

The monument was identified during a field survey carried out by Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly on 2 February 2009. It does not stand alone. Two further ditch barrows lie close by, one approximately fourteen metres to the south-east and another around twelve metres to the east, suggesting this gentle, undulating ground once held some significance for the communities who buried or commemorated their dead here. An 1906 Ordnance Survey map shows a farm trackway running about seventeen metres to the east, a reminder that the landscape has been in continuous agricultural use for a very long time, layering the practical over the ancient in the way that Irish fields so often do.
