Barrows

Barrow, Moanmore, Co. Tipperary

In a field of improved pasture on a gently south-facing slope in County Tipperary, the ground holds the faint outline of something considerably older than the farmland around it.

What survives is a barrow, a prehistoric burial mound, and its defining feature is a quiet ambiguity. The earthwork is not quite circular and not quite regular, shaped instead into a sub-circular form roughly eighteen metres north to south and twenty metres east to west, its edges marked by a low scarp that barely rises above the surrounding field. In places that scarp is only fifteen centimetres high, and nowhere does it exceed a quarter of a metre. It is the kind of monument that asks you to look twice.

A ring-barrow, to give the form its proper name, is a burial monument of prehistoric date in which a central mound or flat area is enclosed by a circular or near-circular bank and ditch. At Moanmore, the enclosing scarp runs from the north around to the east-southeast, continues along the southeast and westward sides, and meets a notably straight section some sixteen metres long on the west-northwest. Along that same western edge there is a possible fosse, a shallow ditch roughly four metres wide and only about twelve centimetres deep, though this feature may owe something to later drainage work rather than original construction. A broader, less defined depression in the northeast quadrant may reflect the movement of water over a very long period. Sitting within the northwest sector of this larger monument is a separate ring-barrow, making Moanmore a site with at least two overlapping or associated phases of funerary activity. The interior of the enclosure slopes gently southward and is slightly uneven underfoot, the ground shifting in ways that hint at what may lie beneath the pasture.
