Graveslab, Fethard, Co. Tipperary

A limestone slab lying flat in a Tipperary churchyard carries an inscription that is almost entirely illegible, yet what survives is enough to conjure a specific life, or rather two specific lives, from the early seventeenth century.

The slab rests in the graveyard of what was once the medieval parish church of St John the Baptist in Fethard, now known as Holy Trinity Church of Ireland. Measuring 1.8 metres long and just 12 centimetres thick, it is a recumbent graveslab, the kind meant to lie directly over a burial, and centuries of exposure have worn its upper surface close to blankness.

What remains legible on the stone is carved in Black Letter script, the dense angular lettering common to medieval and early modern manuscripts and inscriptions, and reads HIC JACET GASPARD in the lower left corner. The rest of the Latin text had already become difficult to make out by the time the antiquarian Long transcribed it in a 1907 to 1909 publication, rendering it as: HIC JACET GASPARD..........QUI OBIIT MARCH A.D. 1635 ET ELLENA HACKETT UXOR EJUSQUE ME FIERI FECITT. The final phrase, "caused this to be made", suggests that Ellena Hackett, named as Gaspard's wife, commissioned the slab herself, perhaps outliving him into the mid-1630s or arranging the monument in anticipation of both their deaths. The decoration is equally considered: a three-armed cross carved in relief, each arm ending in a trefoil, with a sunken lozenge at the centre of the cross-head and the shaft rising from a simple calvary mount, the stepped or curved base conventionally representing Golgotha. Rectangular panels flank the shaft on either side. The lower right corner of the slab is now missing, taking whatever words once occupied that space with it.
