Enclosure, Collinsford, Co. Sligo

Close to the Drumcliff River in County Sligo, there is a low rectangular earthwork that most people would walk past without a second glance.

It sits on the level crest of a gentle ridge, orientated east to west, and from a distance it reads simply as a slightly raised patch of pasture. What marks it out, once you look carefully, is the earthen bank that traces three sides of a near-complete rectangle, enclosing an area roughly 17 metres by 12 metres. The bank itself is modest, around 5.2 metres wide but only 0.35 metres high on the interior, and there is no fosse, the ditched depression that typically accompanies such banks, visible at ground level. Whatever once defined this place, time and agriculture have softened its edges considerably.

Enclosures of this general type are scattered across the Irish landscape and vary enormously in date and purpose, ranging from early medieval settlement enclosures to later agricultural or ceremonial sites. Without excavation, it is rarely possible to assign a confident date to a low earthwork like this one. What can be said is that the bank survives best along the eastern to north-western arc, while the northern side of the site has been effectively absorbed into a field boundary bank, with a laneway running just beyond it. The original entrance has not been identified; whatever gap once allowed access has either been obscured by later land use or eroded beyond recognition. The river lies only 100 metres to the north, which may have made this slight ridge a practical as well as a prominent location for whoever chose to mark it out.
