Ringfort (Cashel), Glen, Co. Sligo

In a field in Glen, County Sligo, the ground gives itself away only if you know what to look for.

A slightly raised circular platform, roughly 26 metres across, sits on a gentle south-facing slope above a small stream to the west. To the untrained eye it might read as a natural undulation in the pasture; in fact it is a cashel, a type of ringfort defined by a stone rather than an earthen enclosure, where the boundary wall is built from rubble limestone rather than piled soil and turf.

The enclosing bank, nearly four metres wide and standing about 0.7 metres above the interior ground level, curves around the site from the west-southwest to the northeast. On the opposite arc, from northeast back round to west-southwest, the stone bank disappears entirely and is replaced by a low earthen scarp, only 0.3 metres high on the outer face. Whether this reflects a deliberate design choice, later stone robbing, or simple deterioration over the centuries is not clear. What is clear is that the interior was deliberately levelled, the builders cutting and filling to compensate for the natural slope of the hillside, so that the living or working space within would have sat roughly flat. No fosse, the defensive ditch that often runs outside such enclosures, survives at ground level here. The original entrance has been lost entirely, its location no longer readable in the surviving fabric. A later field bank and drain, running roughly north-northwest to south-southeast, cuts straight across the eastern side of the site, intersecting the limestone bank to the north and the scarped edge to the south, a reminder that agricultural activity in subsequent centuries paid little attention to what lay beneath the grass.
