Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Carrowpadeen, Co. Sligo

On the limestone uplands of Carrowpadeen in County Sligo, a wedge tomb sits in the kind of quiet that accumulates over millennia.

Wedge tombs are among the most widespread of Ireland's megalithic monument types, so called because the burial gallery narrows and lowers from one end to the other, like a stone wedge pressed into the earth. They are generally associated with the later Neolithic and early Bronze Age, roughly four to five thousand years ago, and they tend to cluster in the west of Ireland, where the landscape still carries faint traces of the communities that raised them.

The Carrowpadeen example is documented in Seán Ó Nualláin's Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, Volume V, covering County Sligo, published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1989. Ó Nualláin's survey remains one of the foundational catalogues of Irish prehistoric monuments, systematically recording the county's megalithic remains at a time when many were still relatively unstudied. County Sligo is particularly dense with such monuments; the Carrowmore complex a few kilometres to the west is one of the largest passage tomb cemeteries in Europe, and the broader landscape suggests that this part of Ireland was a significant centre of Neolithic activity. The Carrowpadeen wedge tomb belongs to that wider pattern, a single, less celebrated node in a region where the dead were being monumentalised across a very long stretch of prehistory.
