Settlement Sites
Near Lecarrow in County Sligo, there is a place officially recorded as a hut site, a small domestic structure typically associated with early medieval settlement, yet when someone actually went to look for it in 2003, there was nothing there.
The site had been listed in the Record of Monuments and Places in 1995, positioned within the boundaries of a moated site, which is a class of later medieval enclosed settlement usually consisting of a raised platform surrounded by a water-filled ditch. By the time an inspector visited, however, no physical trace of the hut could be found.
This is not quite as unusual as it sounds, and yet it points to something genuinely interesting about how the archaeological record works. Monuments are catalogued from older surveys, aerial photographs, historical maps, and local knowledge, and the listing preserves the possibility that something once existed, even when ground conditions, agriculture, or time have erased all surface evidence. In this case, the moated site itself remains on record nearby, but whatever domestic structure may once have sheltered within or beside it had, by the early 2000s, left no visible mark on the landscape whatsoever.
