It is the kind of feature that most walkers would step over without registering, yet its modest dimensions and careful situation suggest it was once deliberately bounded and purposefully used.

The enclosure adjoins the north-western side of a rath, the term for a roughly circular earthen ringfort of the early medieval period, typically used as a farmstead and defined by one or more raised banks and ditches. This particular enclosure is roughly triangular in plan, measuring somewhere between twenty and twenty-five metres north to south, and about fifteen metres across at its northern end. Its southern boundary is formed by the external bank of the rath itself, so whoever made this space was using the existing monument as one ready-made wall. The western side is marked by a low bank of earth and stone, just 1.2 metres wide and 0.3 metres high, barely knee-height today. The north-eastern limit is not a constructed feature at all but a natural rocky ledge, incorporated into the boundary as though the builders saw no reason to improve on what the ground already offered. The result is a small, sheltered, three-sided space that leans against the rath the way a lean-to might lean against an older building.
