Ringfort (Rath), Carrowbrickeen, Co. Sligo

In a gently rolling Sligo pasture, a circular patch of raised ground sits quietly among the fields of Carrowbrickeen, its outline just distinct enough to catch the eye of anyone who knows what to look for.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the type of enclosed farmstead that was the basic unit of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, built and occupied roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but each one carries its own particular geometry and its own particular silence.

This example measures approximately 21 metres north to south and 20 metres east to west, making it a fairly modest example of the type. Around much of its circuit runs a broad, low bank of earth and stone, nearly six metres wide but only around 0.4 metres high internally. Beyond that bank lies a fosse, which is simply a ditch, here over eight metres wide though relatively shallow at around 0.3 metres deep, still visible along the south-western to east-south-eastern arc of the site. On the north-western and north-eastern sides, and again from the east-south-east around to the south-west, the bank gives way entirely to a natural or cut scarp, a steep earthen face rising to about 1.8 metres, which would have served a similar enclosing function. The original entrance has not survived in any identifiable form. Along the south-eastern edge, the boundary of the ringfort has been absorbed into a later field wall, a common fate for ancient earthworks in a farmed landscape. More striking is the presence of a derelict farmhouse whose wall footings press right up against the south-eastern edge of the site, a reminder that this land has been continuously worked and adapted across many centuries, each generation making use of whatever the previous one left behind.
