Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Carrowbrickeen, Co. Sligo

In a county more commonly associated with the great passage tombs of Carrowmore and Knocknarea, a wedge tomb at Carrowbrickeen occupies quieter ground, belonging to a class of megalithic monument that tends to attract less attention than its more celebrated neighbours, yet represents one of the most widespread tomb traditions in prehistoric Ireland.

Wedge tombs, so called because their gallery narrows and lowers from front to back in a distinctive wedge shape, are generally associated with the later Neolithic and into the Bronze Age, roughly the third and second millennia BC. They are found across Ireland in considerable numbers, with particular concentrations in the west and south-west. The Carrowbrickeen example is documented in Seán Ó Nualláin's Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, Volume V, covering County Sligo, published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1989. Ó Nualláin's systematic county-by-county survey remains a foundational reference for understanding the distribution and structural variation of these monuments, and the Carrowbrickeen tomb forms part of that broader picture of Sligo's prehistoric landscape, a county that turns out, on close inspection, to hold far more ancient stonework than the famous hilltop cairns alone might suggest.
