A midden is, in essence, a prehistoric refuse heap, a place where communities discarded the material remnants of daily life, most commonly shells, animal bones, ash, and broken tools. That description sounds unglamorous, but middens are among the most informative archaeological features a site can contain, preserving organic material that rarely survives elsewhere and offering a direct, granular record of how people ate, worked, and lived across centuries or even millennia.

Beyond its classification and location, detailed information about the Luffertan midden is not yet publicly available, which means the particulars of its date, extent, and excavation history remain out of reach for now. What can be said is that County Sligo has a long and well-documented record of prehistoric activity, from the megalithic cemetery at Carrowmore to the passage tombs of the Knocknarea ridge, and coastal and estuarine middens in the region have in other cases pointed to occupation stretching back to the Mesolithic period, when hunter-gatherer groups worked the shoreline and left their middens as the most durable evidence of their presence. Whether Luffertan fits that broader picture, or belongs to a later period entirely, is a question the site itself has not yet publicly answered.
