Ringfort (Cashel), Grange, Co. Sligo

Near the village of Grange in County Sligo, a cashel sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of structure that rewards a second glance.

A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earth and timber, a circular enclosure whose walls once defined the boundary of a farmstead, a family's world made legible in dry-laid or mortared masonry. Thousands of these monuments survive across Ireland, most of them dating to the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, yet each one occupies its own particular piece of ground with its own particular history, now largely unrecorded or waiting to be recovered.

The Grange cashel belongs to a part of Sligo that has been settled for an extraordinarily long time. The wider area around Grange lies close to the Carrowmore megalithic complex and within reach of the slopes of Knocknarea, a region where the evidence of human activity stretches back thousands of years before the early medieval farmers who built ringforts of this kind. A cashel of this type would typically have enclosed a single extended family's dwelling houses, outbuildings, and sometimes a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage that served for storage or as a refuge. The enclosing wall was less a military fortification than a social and agricultural boundary, marking ownership and offering protection for livestock against wolves and raiders alike. Beyond that general picture, the specific story of this particular cashel, its builders, its history of use, and its condition over time, remains to be told in full.
