Barrow (Ring Barrow), Graigue, Co. Sligo

A low, flat-topped mound in the townland of Graigue, County Sligo, is easy to walk past without a second thought, yet its proportions tell a more deliberate story.

This is a ring barrow, a burial monument of prehistoric date in which a central mound is encircled by a fosse (a cut ditch) and an outer earthen bank, the whole arrangement intended to mark and enclose the interment within. At Graigue, the total diameter of the monument reaches 20.30 metres, the mound itself measuring 8.50 metres across and a modest 30 centimetres in height. The surrounding fosse runs to 3 metres in width and 50 centimetres in depth, while the outer bank extends 2.80 metres wide and rises to 75 centimetres. Stones have been incorporated into the fabric of that bank, a detail that hints at the care put into its original construction.

The barrow sits on what surveyors call a false crest, meaning the ground appears to rise toward a high point that is actually just below the true summit of the hill. This positioning is a recurring feature of prehistoric funerary monuments in Ireland, creating the impression of prominence from a distance without necessarily occupying the highest ground. The site was recorded by Timoney in 1984 and appears in earlier work by Burenhult, who listed it as Structure 64 and associated it with the nearby megalithic cemetery at Carrowmore, one of the largest and oldest concentrations of passage tombs in Ireland. That attribution was subsequently corrected; the monument belongs properly to the townland of Graigue rather than Carrowmore, a small but meaningful distinction in a landscape where monuments cluster closely and boundaries matter to understanding their relationships. A modern stone wall now cuts across the western side of the barrow, the kind of agricultural intrusion that affects many earthwork monuments across the country, quietly altering their profile without entirely obscuring what lies beneath.
