Look more carefully, and a second depression becomes visible at its centre, a roughly circular hollow scooped into the very heart of the cairn itself. The outer mound measures about 8.5 metres across and rises no more than a metre at its highest point. The inner hollow, around 5 metres in diameter and nearly a metre deep, is also long grassed over, which tells you something important: whatever digging happened here, it was not recent.

A cairn, in its simplest form, is a deliberate accumulation of stone or earth raised over a burial, a boundary, or a place of significance. The one at Ballure follows the circular form common to prehistoric funerary monuments found across Ireland, though the notes on this particular site do not specify a date or builder. What sets it apart is that central quarry, an old pit dug into the mound by someone who clearly wanted to find out what lay beneath, or perhaps to extract stone. This kind of interference was not uncommon; cairns and barrows across Ireland were ransacked at various points in history by landowners, antiquarians, or simply people in need of building material. The fact that the hollow is now as grassed over as the mound itself suggests the disturbance happened long enough ago for the landscape to have absorbed it entirely.
