Ringfort (Cashel), Lugdoon, Co. Sligo

At Lugdoon in County Sligo, a field in pasture conceals something that rewards a second look.

What appears at first to be a gentle swelling in the ground is in fact a cashel, a ringfort built from stone rather than earth, its circular bank now so thoroughly absorbed into the landscape that it reads more as a slow fold in the hillside than a deliberate human construction. That ambiguity is part of what makes it interesting.

The site sits on the southern edge of a NNW-SSE ridge, straddling a low rise, and measures roughly 35 metres in diameter. Its enclosing bank, some 4.7 metres wide, survives beneath a covering of sod, standing to about 0.9 metres on the eastern side and rising to 1.8 metres at the south-west, where the natural fall of the ground lends it additional apparent height. The outer face of the bank has slumped broadly outward over time, blurring the distinction between built structure and natural slope. A later stone field boundary, the kind of utilitarian division that farmers have been laying across older monuments for centuries, cuts across the bank at the south-west to north-east, suggesting that by the time it was built, the cashel's original function had long since been forgotten. Inside the enclosure, at its centre, a smaller raised feature roughly 5 metres across and up to 0.4 metres high preserves a central hollow about 1.8 metres wide, the purpose of which is not recorded but which may represent the footprint of a former structure. Most striking is the presence of a souterrain in the south-west quadrant. A souterrain is an underground stone-built passage or chamber, typically associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, used variously for storage, refuge, or ventilation. Their presence within cashels is not uncommon, but they are a reminder that these enclosures were once living, functional places rather than ceremonial or symbolic ones.
