Megalithic tomb – court tomb, Carrowgilpatrick, Co. Sligo

In the townland of Carrowgilpatrick in County Sligo, a court tomb survives from the Neolithic period, quietly marking a landscape that was already ancient by the time the first written records of Ireland were set down.

Court tombs are among the oldest megalithic monuments in Ireland, typically dating to around 4000 BCE or earlier. They are defined by a forecourt, usually a semicircular or oval open space formed by large upright stones, which leads into one or more roofed gallery chambers where the dead were placed. The forecourt is thought to have served a ceremonial function, suggesting these were not simply burial sites but places where the living gathered to mark death and perhaps communicate with those who had passed.

The primary scholarly record for this site comes from Seán Ó Nualláin's survey of the megalithic tombs of Sligo, published in 1989 as the fifth volume of a national survey series. Ó Nualláin's work systematically documented the megalithic monuments of the county, and the Carrowgilpatrick tomb was among those he recorded. County Sligo is unusually dense with prehistoric monuments of this type, partly due to the region's distinctive limestone geology, which provided both the raw material for construction and, over millennia, the conditions that allowed some structures to survive. The concentration of court tombs across the Sligo landscape, from the well-known Creevykeel to quieter, less-visited examples like this one, points to a region that was heavily settled and ritually active during the Neolithic.
