Cairn – boundary cairn, Cabragh, Co. Sligo

On the upper bog-covered slopes of the Ox Mountains in County Sligo, there is a boundary cairn that no longer exists.

Not lost to recent development or deliberate removal, but simply gone, absorbed back into the landscape at some point after 1700 AD, leaving no visible trace. It is classified officially as a 'Cairn Possible', which is a quietly telling designation: an entry in the archaeological record for something that may or may not have ever been substantial enough to survive.

This vanished cairn is the second most northerly of a group of ten, strung out in a line across the bogland to mark the townland boundary between Cabragh and Gortakeeran. Boundary cairns of this kind, essentially deliberate piles of stone set at intervals to define territorial limits, were a practical feature of the Irish rural landscape, functioning as durable landmarks in terrain that offered few other reference points. What makes this particular series quietly puzzling is that none of the ten cairns appear on the 1837 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the great mid-nineteenth-century survey that recorded Irish townlands and their features in meticulous detail. Their absence from that record, combined with a probable post-1700 date, suggests these were relatively recent constructions in archaeological terms, built and then lost within a comparatively short span of time.

The bog itself has likely done most of the work of erasure. The upper slopes of the Ox Mountains are blanketed in deep, wet peat, which can swallow stone structures gradually and completely. What remains of the boundary line today is mostly administrative, a townland division still on the map, its physical markers gone.
