Megalithic tomb – wedge tomb, Breeoge, Co. Sligo

On a stretch of County Sligo countryside near the townland of Breeoge, a wedge tomb sits as one of the quieter remnants of prehistoric Ireland.

Wedge tombs are the most numerous class of megalithic monument on the island, built roughly between 2500 and 2000 BC during the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age. The name comes from their characteristic shape: the burial gallery tapers in both height and width from front to back, giving the structure a distinct wedge profile when viewed from the side. They are typically oriented with the wider, taller entrance facing west or south-west, a pattern consistent enough across Ireland to suggest it was deliberate, though whether it reflected ritual, astronomical, or practical concerns remains a matter of debate.

The Breeoge example is documented in Seán Ó Nualláin's Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland, Volume V, covering County Sligo, published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1989. Ó Nualláin's survey remains one of the foundational catalogues of Irish megalithic architecture, and County Sligo is particularly well-represented in it, given the concentration of prehistoric monuments across the county, from the famous passage tomb complex at Carrowmore to lesser-known sites scattered across the drumlin and limestone landscapes further inland. The inclusion of Breeoge in this survey places it within a broader effort to record monuments that might otherwise pass unnoticed amid farmland and scrub.
