Hut site, Coolbock, Co. Sligo

Settlement Sites
On a ridge top in the Coolbock townland of County Sligo, a circular ring of low earthen walling sits quietly in pasture, its original purpose unrecorded and its age undated.
What survives is modest but legible: a roughly circular structure about ten metres across, with walls up to two metres thick that stand just over a metre high on the outside and considerably lower within. A three-metre gap on the western side suggests either an original entrance or a later breach, and the proportions of the whole are consistent with what archaeologists class as a hut site, a catch-all term for the remains of a simple roofed dwelling, often prehistoric or early medieval in origin, whose internal fittings and organic materials have long since vanished.
