Stone Monuments

Standing stone, Barrysbrook, Co. Offaly

Most ancient monuments demand to be seen.

This one has solved that problem by disappearing entirely. The standing stone at Barrysbrook in County Offaly is no longer standing, no longer visible, and quite possibly no longer upright at all. According to local knowledge, it was buried in the same field where it once stood, leaving a patch of well-drained pasture on a north-east facing slope that gives no outward sign of anything beneath it. It does not appear on the first two editions of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, which means its recorded history is thin even before accounting for its current absence.

When planning for a new dwelling brought the site to the attention of Offaly County Council, the council requested further information before proceeding. Archaeologist Dominic Delany carried out a test excavation under licence no. 00E0866 on 11 November 2000, opening four trenches across the footprint of the proposed development. The stone itself had stood roughly 50 metres east of the planned house. The excavation found topsoil 0.7 metres deep sitting directly over bedrock and natural sand and gravel, with no archaeological material of any kind. The buried stone was not the subject of the dig, so it was not sought, and the field kept its secret. The site sits approximately one kilometre south-east of Croghan Hill, a prominent glacial mound with its own considerable archaeological associations, and a second standing stone survives about 100 metres to the south-west, making Barrysbrook part of a loose scatter of prehistoric monuments across this part of the midlands rather than an isolated curiosity.
