Graveyard, Clonyhurk, Co. Offaly

At Clonyhurk in County Offaly, a fragment of medieval wall does double duty: the northern wall of a vanished church has been absorbed into the boundary of the graveyard that grew up around it, so that what once enclosed a place of worship now encloses the dead.

The southern wall has fared worse, reduced to footings barely visible at ground level. No carved stonework, no doorway mouldings, no window surrounds survive to give the building a character beyond its bare dimensions.

Those dimensions, at least, are on record. Writing in 1883, a scholar named Comerford measured the church at forty feet east to west and eighteen feet north to south, a modest but not unusual footprint for a rural medieval church. The building's history stretches back at least to 1387, the year in which it appears in the Annals of the Four Masters, a seventeenth-century chronicle compiled by Franciscan scholars drawing on older Irish sources. O'Flanagan, writing in 1933, identified this reference and connected it to the Clonyhurk site. The graveyard itself continued in use long after the church fell out of use or fell apart, and the headstones that remain date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Immediately to the south stands a tower house, the kind of fortified residential structure built by Gaelic and Anglo-Norman lords throughout the late medieval period, which suggests this small cluster of ruins once formed part of a more substantial local settlement, a church and a residence in close proximity, as was common across the Irish midlands.
