Ringfort (Rath), Paddinstown, Co. Westmeath

At the centre of this quiet Westmeath ringfort, where you might expect the traces of an early medieval dwelling, there is instead a shallow circular depression roughly two and a half metres wide that was probably once a potato pit.

It is a small detail, but a telling one. A monument that began its life over a thousand years ago as a defended farmstead, a rath, enclosed by an earthen bank and a fosse (the shallow ditch that typically ran outside such enclosures), ended up being pressed into service for subsistence agriculture, most likely during the post-medieval period.

The site sits on a slight natural rise in gently undulating grassland in Paddinstown townland, County Westmeath, with open views across the surrounding countryside. It is modest in scale, roughly 27 metres north to south and 30 metres east to west, and what survives of its enclosing bank is poorly preserved. Part of the bank has been absorbed into a field boundary running from the south-west to the north, and along that stretch it has been steepened and faced with stone on its outer side, which suggests successive generations quietly adapted it rather than demolished it outright. A modern road running north to south cuts through the eastern side of the monument and doubles as the townland boundary with Paddinstown Lower, meaning the site has been literally divided by the administrative landscape. Aerial photography taken in November 2011 confirmed that the enclosing bank had been levelled along its southern arc. Cultivation ridges are still visible crossing the interior on a north-north-west to south-south-east alignment, further evidence of the agricultural use that gradually reshaped the monument. The site does not stand alone in the landscape: another ringfort lies roughly 190 metres to the north-north-east, and the remains of a levelled castle sit approximately 180 metres to the south-south-east, hinting at successive phases of settlement and authority in this small corner of the midlands.
