That elevated position was almost certainly the point. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a farmstead and its occupants within a bank of earth or stone. This one at Rathcorbally is modest in scale, measuring approximately 23 metres across on its north to south axis, but its placement on high ground suggests the same concerns that drove most rath construction: visibility, defensibility, and a clear sense of territorial presence.

The site has not come through the centuries unscathed. The eastern side has been quarried away at some point, removing a section of the enclosing bank and leaving the monument incomplete on that side. Field fences running northeast to southwest cut across the monument at its northwest and southeast edges, a reminder of how later agricultural reorganisation often carved through older features without much ceremony. The interior slopes gently toward the southeast, and while shallow depressions are visible within the enclosure, these do not appear to carry any particular archaeological significance. What remains is enough to read the original form: a circular area enclosed by an earth and stone bank, set deliberately on the highest available ground.
