This is a ring barrow, a type of burial mound typically consisting of a central raised platform enclosed by a surrounding ditch, known as a fosse, and an outer earthen bank. The whole structure here measures roughly eighteen metres across at its widest, with the mound itself spanning about ten metres, and it commands clear sightlines to the south-east, south-west, and north-west, a placement that seems anything but accidental.

What makes the site quietly compelling is not just its age but its neighbourhood. Within a radius of two hundred metres, the landscape holds at least three other recorded monuments: a concentric enclosure to the west, a ringfort to the south-west, and an earthwork to the north-east. The clustering suggests that this corner of County Westmeath was, at some point in prehistory or the early medieval period, a place of sustained significance, used and reused across generations for purposes that blended the ritual with the territorial. The ring barrow was added to the Register of Historic Monuments on 13 May 1986, giving it formal legal protection. That protection, however, has not entirely spared it. A field fence marking the townland boundary with Clonkill cuts across the monument from north-west to south-east, and the portion of the barrow on the eastern side of that fence has been quarried away. A section of the outer bank at the south-west has also been lost to quarrying. What survives is real but partial, a truncated version of something once more complete.
