Ringfort (Rath), Reynella, Co. Westmeath

On a low hillock in County Westmeath, known locally as the Stony Hill, a modest but legible piece of early Irish life sits in the middle of ordinary farmland.

What makes it worth a second look is the detail that survives: two concentric earth and stone banks enclosing a roughly sub-circular area, with a fosse, or defensive ditch, cut between them. The inner bank remains well preserved, while the outer has worn almost flat, which is itself a small lesson in how these places decay unevenly over centuries of ploughing and grazing.

Ringforts, or raths, were the most common form of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically associated with farming families of some local standing. They were built not as military fortifications in any grand sense but as enclosures to protect livestock, define territory, and mark a household's place in the landscape. The Reynella example follows the classic two-bank pattern, with the inner enclosure measuring approximately thirty metres north-west to south-east and thirty-five metres north-east to south-west. A possible entrance gap is visible on the western side, and at the eastern edge the inner bank curves outward in a way that suggests deliberate shaping rather than later disturbance. Across the interior, faint traces of cultivation ridges run roughly west-north-west to east-south-east, a sign that at some point after the rath fell out of use as a settlement enclosure, the ground inside it was turned over for tillage.

The hillock gives the site good views across the surrounding undulating grassland in all directions, which would have made it an attractive position for anyone wanting to keep watch over their land and animals. The townland boundary with Williamstown passes just ninety metres to the east, marked by a field fence, so the rath sits close to the edge of Reynella itself, a quiet detail that hints at how these older earthworks often ended up anchoring the boundaries of later land divisions.
