A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of early medieval Ireland, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and external ditches. This one, in the townland of Corkan, has been levelled so completely that by 1975 a survey recorded no visible trace of any antiquity at the surface whatsoever. The ground has swallowed it.

And yet it persists, in its way. Aerial photography reveals the ghost of a circular area roughly 30 metres across, its outline preserved as a cropmark, the kind of subtle differential growth in vegetation that betrays a backfilled fosse, the outer ditch that would once have ringed the enclosure, beneath the soil. A linear field boundary cuts across the north-western sector of the site, a much later intrusion that has further erased whatever remained. What is striking is how legible the monument was in 1837, when the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map depicted it as a clearly defined circular feature, already truncated at the north-west but still recognisable enough to be annotated as a fort on the OS Fair Plan of the same year. Something between that survey and the late twentieth century reduced it to nothing above ground, the fosse filled in, the banks spread or carted away, the outline dissolved into ordinary farmland. A second ringfort survives approximately 88 metres to the east, which means this site was once part of a small cluster, a pairing of enclosed settlements that was not unusual in early medieval Ireland but is now reduced to one visible example and one shadow.
