Ringfort (Rath), Ballyboy, Co. Westmeath

What was once a complete circle is now a D, and that partial shape tells a quiet story of gradual erasure.

This ringfort in Ballyboy, County Westmeath, has been losing ground for some time, its northern arc ploughed or levelled away until only a curved bank of earth and stone survives on the eastern, southern, and western sides. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and a fosse, or external ditch, encircling a domestic interior. This one has no detectable fosse, and no obvious entrance survives in the remaining stretch of bank, leaving the monument with a slightly sealed, incomplete quality.

The earthwork sits on a low rise in pasture, its views largely blocked by nearby ridges, which gives the site an inward, unassuming character. The first detailed record of it comes from the 1837 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, where it appears as a roughly circular earthwork. By the time the revised twenty-five-inch map was produced in 1913, the shape had already contracted to a semi-circle, and the fort is noted as lying approximately 45 metres south of Ballyboy House. A 1980 description records dimensions of 31 metres northwest to southeast and 18.6 metres northeast to southwest, with the northeastern portion showing a modified straight-sided scarp beyond which the monument had been levelled entirely. The interior of what remains is generally level, with one curious feature: a small, shallow rectangular depression near the centre, whose purpose is unrecorded. Two modern field boundaries now run close to the surviving perimeter, and on aerial photography the remnant reads as a tree-planted D-shaped area, the planted trees perhaps inadvertently preserving the outline they mark.
