House – indeterminate date, Kilmacnevan, Co. Westmeath

At Kilmacnevan in County Westmeath, there is a place that rewards knowing what to look for, though there is now almost nothing left to see.

A rectangular house of indeterminate age once occupied the interior of a ringfort, one of those circular earthwork enclosures that dot the Irish countryside and typically date from the early medieval period. What makes the arrangement quietly interesting is the relationship between the two: a dwelling built not beside or near a ringfort, but squarely within one, its long axis running roughly north-northeast to south-southwest, and a low internal cross bank suggesting the building was divided into at least two sections. A second ringfort sits only 75 metres to the east, so this slight natural rise in the undulating grassland was clearly a place people returned to, and organised themselves around, across a long stretch of time.

The house site was recorded as low, grass-covered banks, which is a common way that vanished structures leave their traces in the Irish landscape, where earthworks survive as gentle humps and hollows rather than standing walls. That modest visibility became no visibility at all when the site was levelled sometime between 1972 and 1973. By November 2011, aerial photography confirmed what the levelling had accomplished: no surface remains whatsoever. The setting itself persists, a gentle rise with open views to the south-east, south-west, and north-west, which is exactly the kind of elevated, well-drained ground that attracted early settlement. But the archaeology, already subtle, was erased within living memory.
