Enclosure, Cloroge Beg, Co. Wexford

On a low spur of the Blackstairs Mountain foothills in County Wexford, a grass-and-fern-covered rectangle sits quietly between two river valleys, with a stream running about eighty metres to its south.

Ordnance Survey maps from 1839 and 1924 record it simply as a wooded feature, roughly 150 metres south of Wilmount House, but locally it goes by a different name entirely: a raheen. That word, from the Irish "ráithín", meaning a small ringfort or earthen enclosure, carries a weight of folk memory that official cartography tends to flatten. The gap between what a map records and what a community quietly knows is part of what makes this place interesting.

The enclosure is rectangular, measuring 32 metres on its longer axis and 27 metres on the shorter, and is defined by a low earthen bank about three metres wide and no more than 0.7 metres tall. Unlike the classic ringfort, which is typically circular and usually accompanied by a fosse (a defensive ditch cut around the exterior), this one has no visible fosse and no identifiable entrance, which makes interpreting its original purpose somewhat speculative. Within the interior, the foundations of a rectangular building survive as a scatter of stone roughly two metres wide, covering a footprint of 16 metres by 8.5 metres. Whether the enclosure and the building are contemporary, or whether one predates the other, is not something the physical remains alone can settle. The rectangular form sets it slightly apart from the more common circular or oval enclosures found across Ireland, and its classification as an "enclosure" rather than a ringfort or cashel reflects that uncertainty.
